The Benefits of Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter or Theobroma cacao is a solid fat expressed from the fermented, washed, dried, and roasted seed of the cocoa tree. Cocoa butter is used to make both chocolate as well as lotions, salves, and products for the skin. The unrefined fat has a beautiful buttery, chocolate aroma. Theobroma is a Greek word meaning food of the gods. Yes it's awesome stuff.

Cocoa butter is highly protective of skin and contains about 5 IU of vitamin per ounce. It softens and lubricates the skin, reduces dryness, improves skin flexibility, has anti-oxidant properties, and is often used to treat wrinkles or prevent stretch marks.

Cocoa butter contains oleic acid, palmtic acid, and steric acid and has a shelf life of 3-4 years. Organic cocoa butter will give you the best butter for skin preparations. In deodorized and refined versions the skin healing properties may change.

Our tub truffles (aka bath melts) contain organic, unrefined cocoa butter. Drop one in a warm bath and soak for 15-20 minutes to soothe your skin and senses. Or Tricia can craft a body butter or cream containing cocoa butter to soothe a variety of skin issues.
