Aromatherapy Scrub Recipes

A fantastic way to enjoy essential oils and aromatherapy is in a sugar or salt scrub.

Scrubs help exfoliate the skin, should leave it feeling soft and nourished, and encourage skin cell turnover, which leads to more radiant looking skin. If gentle enough they can be used on the face, but often they are meant for the body. Here are a few basic recipes to try.

Basic Sugar Scrub

Basic sugar scrubs are just oil and sugar -- simple. This one includes bright citrus essential oils, but you can use any skin safe essential oil. Plus I'll share a few trips to help them feel less greasy.

What you'll need:

4 - 8 oz PET or HDPE plastic or glass jar (side note -- glass jar and oily scrub means you need to be careful not to drop it in the shower or tub!)

3 oz fine white sugar

1 oz jojoba oil (or other suitable oil such as fractionated coconut, avocado oil, or grapeseed oil)

4-8 drops lime essential oil

2-4 drops orange essential oil

optional clean mixing bowl

Add sugar to the jar. Top with oil. Add the essential oils. Stir to combine. If you prefer mix everything in a bowl and spoon into jar. If you don't have a scale you can eye ball it. Fill the jar 1/2 to 3/4 full with sugar and top with oil. If you like a more oily mixture add more oil -- and it you like a more grainy mixture keep the oil on the lower end.

If you're using a 4 oz jar keep the TOTAL amount of essential oils to 3-10 drops per ounce of product (so 12 to 40 drops TOTAL). If using an 8 oz jar and filling with product you can double the amount of essential oil.

If you'd like a less greasy feeling scrub try adding a 1/2 teaspoon or so of castille soap. If you have access to more ingredients you could use polysorbate 20 or 80 or decyl glucoside but not everyone has those ingredients on hand.

Coffee Sugar Scrub

This yummy scrub is an invigorating, wake up scrub that coffee lovers will adore. Peppermint adds a cooling burst of awesomeness.

4 - 8 oz PET or HDPE plastic or glass jar (side note -- glass jar and oily scrub means you need to be careful not to drop it in the shower or tub!)

2 - 3 oz white sugar

1 -2 oz finely ground coffee

1 oz jojoba oil (or other suitable oil such as fractionated coconut, avocado oil, or grapeseed oil)

5 - 20+ drops of peppermint essential oil (keep it to 5-10 drops PER ounce of product.)

optional clean mixing bowl

Add the sugar and coffee to your jar and stir to combine. Top with oil and peppermint essential oil and stir to combine. If desired you can mix in a bowl and spoon into jar.

If you'd like a less greasy feeling scrub try adding a 1/2 teaspoon or so of castille soap. If you have access to more ingredients you could use polysorbate 20 or 80 or decyl glucoside but not everyone has those ingredients on hand.

Creamy Sugar Scrub:

I'm trying to keep things simple with supplies that you may have on hand at home. This scrub features solid coconut oil to give it a creamier feel. It's a modification of a scrub that includes shea and cocoa butter -- two ingredients that are not standard pantry fare.

4 - 8 oz plastic or glass jar (side note -- glass jar and oily scrub means you need to be careful not to drop it in the shower or tub!)

2 - 2.5 oz White or raw brown sugar

1 oz olive or avocado oil

1 oz coconut oil (solid kind)

5 - 20 drops Lavender essential oil (optional)

Clean mixing bowl

This one is tough to mix in the jar. Combine sugar and oils in a clean mixing bowl. Fold in coconut oil and mix until well incorporated. Add essential oil if desired and spoon into jar.

If you'd like a less greasy feeling scrub try adding a 1/2 teaspoon or so of castille soap. If you have access to more ingredients you could use polysorbate 20 or 80 or decyl glucoside but not everyone has those ingredients on hand.
