Breathe In, Stress Out: Aromatherapy & Holistic Practices for Stress Awareness Month

April is National Stress Awareness Month—a gentle reminder to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with what matters most – things like well-being, relationships, and mental health.
Stress affects us all. It is part of life. It can weigh on our minds and settle into our bodies, showing up in our sleep, our moods, our digestion, and our energy. But when we mindfully allow ourselves to slow down and ground ourselves through small, meaningful practices, it can help restore balance.
Aromatherapy offers more than beautiful scents—it offers emotional support, grounded in the wisdom of nature and the rhythms of the breath.
Essential Oils That Help Soothe and Support
Each essential oil carries a story, a vibration, a gift. Here are a few allies that support emotional balance:
Lavender – Softens tension and supports rest
Sweet Orange – Brightens the spirit and eases worry
Frankincense – Grounds the breath and opens inner calm
Bergamot – Encourages emotional balance and uplift
Cedarwood – Brings a sense of strength and stability
Simple Practices to Invite Calm
You don’t need to overhaul your life to feel better. These gentle rituals can be deeply transformative:

1. Direct Palm Inhalation
Rub a drop of a calming oil like lavender between your palms, cup your hands over your nose, and breathe slowly. A simple act, a sacred pause.
Always use skin-safe oils and dilute if needed. Avoid strong oils like cinnamon or oregano.
2. Grounding Neck or Foot Massage
Massage diluted essential oils into the back of your neck or the soles of your feet before bed. Some suggestions are cedarwood, vetiver, frankincense, lavender, or chamomile to feel rooted and at peace.
3. Step Outside
Enjoy the beauty of nature. Take a stroll among the trees in a forest or a park. Enjoy the warmth of sun on your face (getting morning sun can even help you sleep better at night – really!). Listen to the sounds of nature: birds, the rustle of wind through the trees, the quiet. Nature is grounding and nurturing—reminding you that you are part of something greater.
4. Scented Journaling or Reading
Apply a calming roller blend or diffuse essential oils while you journal or read. Let the aroma enhance the time of quiet reflection and slowing down.
5. Scentiful Shower
Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil or blend to the shower floor to create an aroma spa like experience. Some of my favorites are a drop of lemongrass and lavender to uplift or a drop of peppermint and eucalyptus to revive.
